Reported By-Jim Fisher
(May 6, 2000) - Scott Neitzel brought a long dry spell to an end in Interstate Racing Association competition with his victory in Saturday's event at Butler (Mi.) Motor Speedway. Neitzel, which last won at Plymouth, Wisconsin in 1996, led early in the event only to lose the top spot when he slid high on a midrace restart.
Neitzel regained the lead when the top three cars were all
involved in a mishap seven laps later. Neitzel and Kurt Winker made up the
front row on the start and traded the lead several times in the opening two laps
of the event. The first caution slowed the race on lap three, with Ken Mackey,
Wayne Mojeski and Bill Waite, Jr. coming together in turn four. Winker
held second spot until he ran into trouble in heavy lapped traffic on lap eight,
allowing fourth-starting Paul May to get by. Neitzel held the point through
several restarts, pulling away each time, but slipped high
exiting turn two on a lap 11 restart, with May, Winker and Raymond Hensley able
to get by. May led until lap 18 when he made contact with Waite in lapped
traffic. Winker and Hensley were able to avoid making contact, but
spun over the bank. The turn of events put Neitzel back at the front and
moved John Haeni, Todd Daun and Chuck Wilson into the top four. Haeni held the
runner up spot until a turn four spin on lap 18 knocked him back in the
finishing order. Daun moved into second and challenged on two remaining
restarts, but was unable to get by the Beaver Dam, Wisconsin driver.
Following Neitzel and Daun at the finish were Wilson, Joe Roe and Kim Mock.
Raymond Shank, Ken Mackey, Travis Whitney, Ken Ratchford and Hensley completed
the top 10.
Justin VanWyck took his second career win in the feature event
for the street stock division, holding off Eric Wilson for the win. VanWyck
started on the outside of the front row and led until Glenn Heath was able to
get past in
lapped traffic. But Heath's racer suffered mechanical woes, handing the top spot
back to VanWyck. Wilson closed late in the event, but ran out of laps. Tim
Abbeg was third, with Shawn Perkins fourth and Reynaldo Rivera fifth. The
rest of the top 10 was made up of Joel Sherman, Zeke McNew, Tim Swan, Andy
Kellicutt and Sheril Deshaw.
