Paul May drove to his first career Great Lakes Outlaw Sprint Series (GLOSS)
feature victory during Mid-Season Championships for the group Saturday night at
Butler (Mi.) Motor Speedway. Eric Wilson in street stocks and John Turnbill, Jr.
in the Michigan Legends also took feature wins.
May started fourth on the grid for the GLOSS feature, with Greg Wheeler and Ken Mackey making up the front row. Wheeler shot into the lead, with Mackey, May and Chuck Wilson following. Wilson made a great move to go all the way from fourth to second on lap two, but a caution flag for Tim Norman's turn four spin negated the pass, with the race reverting back to the last completed lap. Two other mishaps slowed the early stages of the event, with Wheeler able to pull away out front under green. By lap six, Mackey had been shuffled back to fourth, with May and Wilson exchanging in a battle for the runner up spot. Wilson ducked low in turn three in an effort to gain the spot, but the two made contact, sending Wilson spinning and to the back of the field on the restart. Wheeler controlled the race through the midway point, able to drive away on several restarts. But on lap 18 May seized the point and remained out front the remainder of the way to claim the win. Wheeler held down second position until three laps from the finish when he rolled to a stop in turn four, eventually taking a 15th place finish.
Wheeler's departure moved fourth row starter Chad Blonde into second. Blonde,
who collected his first career sprint win earlier this year at Butler,
challenged on a restart with one lap remaining, but was forced to settle for
second at the checker. Mackey was third, with Norman regrouping from his early
spin to take fourth. The remainder of the top 10 was made up of Jody Hunt,
Dustin Daggett, Wilson, Todd Kelley, Bob Dooley and Carl Fry, Jr. GLOSS heat
races went to Mackey, Hunt, Wheeler and Marv Pifer. Wheeler won the dash, with
Kelley taking the 'B' Main.
Eric Wilson, the 1999 Rookie of the Year in the street stock division,
claimed his first feature victory of the season in that class, leading every
lap. Wilson started on the outside of the front row and drove into the lead,
with two other drivers also making big moves early. Third starting Melanie Gaff
disposed of polesitter Tim Wilber to move to second by lap two, and seemed to be
gaining ground on Wilson. Tim Abbeg, coming all the way from
ninth place start, also looked strong early, quickly moving to third by lap
three. But the charging duo made contact on lap eight, with Gaff spinning in
turn three, sending her to the back of the pack for the restart. Abbeg was also
sent to the tail. Wilson went unchallenged the remainder of the way,
despite a good runner up effort from Fred Speck. On the final turn of the last
lap, Wilson's racer broke a ball joint in the front end, but he held on to
record the win in his Jet Express/American Truck Service/Auto Trim racer.
Former street stock champ Randy Nichols followed Wilson and Speck at the finish,
with Shawn Perkins fourth, Wilber fifth, and Glenn Heath sixth. Heat races were
won by 1999 division champ Rick Spieth, Grady Jarrell, Gaff and Wilson. Staton
Trumble took his first career checker in one of the 'B" Mains, while 1998 street stock champ Shawn Mason took his first of the season in the other.
